5th grade curriculum project
This was a very beneficial project to work on. Our teacher's sister is a 5th grade teacher and she asked our class for advice on how to setup a curriculum to teach the basics of chemistry. Our group was very productive when it came to ideas and planning out the labs and procedures. In this curriculum, there are 5 lab activities followed by short answer assessments and finally there will be a big project/assessment at the end of their chemistry unit. I feel that this project was good for us as well because it as its purpose is to engage younger students in chemistry based labs, I feel that it helps us grown in our knowledge and our skills on how to work efficiently in a group.
Below is our full presentation for our 5th grade curriculum.
Reflection:
I am very proud to be in the group I was assigned. We worked very efficient and complete on coming up with the requirements to teach science to 5th graders. When I remembered my 5th grade year, the only science we covered was basic earth science. We never got near to learning the basics of chemistry until the late middle school years. I wanted to help compose a solid curriculum that would teach younger students how to engage in a project based environment. The one advantage of being in STEM is getting that hands on experience with working with other students on a major project that requires collaboration and communication. I feel that our curriculum is our best work from this year. Our group put hours upon hours of thought and reason into this project. I feel that if and when 5th graders do finally experience our curriculum, their whole view on science and team work will be changed for the better. Those skills are imperative to develop at a young age as it will benefit them greatly in the near-future.
