Hand Warmer Challenge
Our Goal:
Our group was presented with the challenge to build a hand-warmer to be sold in our school student store. We took on the challenge and started brainstorming ideas that would work. We are to build a low-cost, environmentally-friendly, safe, and efficient hand-warmer.
Process:
Our Hand-warmer went through many changes and phases. We first started off with the chemical solution which consists of Lithium chloride and water mixed into a regular ziploc plastic bag. Then we decided to cut back on the size and materials used, remember we are trying to build an efficient and low-cost hand-warmer for students. Finally our prototype in a 3 in. by 5 in. bag, completely sealed and heats up by 20* celsius.
Our final Hand-wamer presentation:

Reflection:
This project taught me a lot about chemical reactions and how to collaborate with my group to make an efficient product that has a potential to be sold in the student store at San Marin High. Two things that I thought were great was that our group was very persistent, we never gave up when we reached a challenge. The other thing I liked was how well we worked together in building the product itself. I would be in control of sealing the hand-warmer bag while someone else from the group gathered the necessary chemicals to put into the bag, this made the building process much easier and efficient. two things I thought we could improve on would be to have more of a solid communication system. With that, everyone in the group would be aware of what is going to happen with our project. The other aspect that I see improvement on is to have some more time focused on developing ideas rather than just jumping right to conclusions without thoroughly thinking out the process and outcome. I really liked this group because I fell that we worked well together and this project was very beneficial to our knowledge and it helps us build on more of the hands-on experience in STEM Chem.
